BHS varsity volleyball beats Ursuline
The Boardman High School varsity volleyball team defeated Ursuline in three straight sets with the scores of 25-8, 25-15 and 25-14. Leaders for the Spartans were Krista Johnson with nine digs, seven kills and two aces, Katie Platt with 11 assists, five aces and four kills, Amber McMillan with five aces and four kills, Courtney Platt with 13 digs and two aces and Elli Hritz with nine digs. This brings their record to 16-4 overall and 9-3 in the AAC.
Boardman Center boys cross country does well at AAC Championship
Michel Dunham continued his great season with another first place finish at the AAC Championship that took place at Brookfield High School. Dunham blazed the two-mile course in a time of 11:37. While teammates Justin Maloney 13:10, Christian Saab 13:17, Patrick Hubert 13:18 and Anthony Marshall 13:31 helped the Boardman Center boys place third overall. Fellow teammates Nick Prosser, Charlie Davis, Egan Hare, Carmen Quattro, Ethan Anderson, Ben Ludban, Alan Cuevas and Beau Gorby ran great races as well for the BCMS boys.
Boardman Center girls cross country places
Boardman Center girls ran well at the All American Conference Championsips. Brookfield High School hosted the two-mile course on Oct. 6. The Boardman girls were led by seventh-graders Alayna Cuevas, Julia Gorby, Bailey Moore and Ally Schwendeman, all placing in the top 25. Cuevas placed 12th to lead the girls, while Gorby placed 13th, Moore 17th and Schwendeman 24th.
Isabella Alvarico finished off the scoring for the Boardman girls. Jordan Solemen, Isabella Dwyer and Shayne Harris also ran well for the Center girls. Isabella Roush, Katelyn Manning, Tori Romeo and Iqra Imran also ran the tough Brookfield Course well for the Spartans.
Boardman Glenwood defeats South Catholic
Oct. 8, the Boardman Glenwood football team beat South Catholic 32-0. Zach Ryan passed 10-13 for 175-yards for three touchdowns and Connor Miller passed 3-5 for 34 yards. Timmy Bowser rushed 7 for 107-yards and a touchdown (70-yards), Ty Ventresco rushed 1 for 12-yards and Richy Evans rushed 1 for 7-yards. Bowser received 133-yards and a touchdown (41-yards), Connor Miller received 51-yards and a touchdown (21-yards), Ryan received 12-yards, Isiah Suarez received 7-yards and Michael Pastella received 6-yards and a touchdown (2-yards). Miller had two 2-point converstions, and Ryan and Suarez had one each. Isaac Land and Bowser each had a sack. Jacob Banko had a fumble recovery. Leading tacklers were Miller, Richy Evans, Land, Derek Billiter and Bowser.
Boys soccer wins against Glenoak
In the final home game of the season on Oct. 10, the Boardman boys varsity soccer team defeated Canton Glenoak 3-0. Junior Robb Lewis gave The Spartans a 1-0 halftime lead, while seniors Shane Learman and Chris Dailey added second half goals. Senior Adam Deeley had two assists. Seniors Kevin Durkin and Liam McCarthy had four and one saves, respectively, in shared time at the keeper position. The Spartans outshot the Golden Eagles 11-5 on the evening.
Boys soccer defeats Warren
Senior Adam Deeley led the Spartans with a goal and two assists in the Oct. 8 game against Warren G. Harding. The Spartans won 4-1. Seniors Chris Dailey and Shane Learman along with sophomore Jacob Smotzer added goals to Boardman’s tally. Senior Kevin Durkin had two saves in goal. The Raiders’ lone goal came off a penalty kick. Boardman outshot Warren 19-3 on the night. The JV match finished in a 7-1 win for the Spartans.
The Spartans won their third game of the season by defeating the Canfield Cardinals by a score of 10-0 on Oct. 2. It was the first time the Spartans and Cardinals have played each other since 1985. The game was scoreless at the end of the first half before the Spartans scored 10 points in the third quarter. Senior Mario Graziani scored Boardman’s touchdown with a 40-yard run and senior Adam Deeley kicked the extra point for a 7-0 lead. Deeley then kicked a 35-yard field goal with 90 seconds left in the third quarter to complete the scoring for the Spartans. For Boardman, Graziani led the Spartans rushing for 221-yards on 37 carries. Quarterback J.R. Ryan threw for 59-yards completing seven out of 12 attempts. Senior Travis Koontz caught two passes for 30-yards. The Spartans had 13 first downs while Canfield had three, and Boardman rushed for 233-yards while the Cardinals gained only 33-yards on the ground.
