Poland trustees reviewing Yellow Creek action plan
POLAND
As some community members have raised concerns about water-quality issues in Yellow Creek, local government is being asked to do its part to protect the Yellow Creek watershed.
Stephanie Dyer, environmental program manager at Eastgate Regional Council Governments, the water-quality management agency for Mahoning and Trumbull counties, today presented the Yellow Creek Watershed Action Plan to the township trustees.
The plan was endorsed earlier this year by the state, and Eastgate now is seeking endorsements from various local communities that are part of the 40-square-mile watershed that begins in Columbiana County and ends at the Mahoning River in Struthers. The watershed contains two drinking-water sources.
The timing is perfect, Dyer said, given that water-quality in Yellow Creek has been a topic of discussion in the community recently after resident Barbara Stacy made her case to the school board, village council and trustees about warning people to stay out of the stream.
Her 13-year-old grandson felt into the stream last year, scraping his knee along the way and developing a serious bacterial infection that his family believes was caused by bacteria from the creek.
