Kayla Hoffmaster: Baritone, Mellophone

Q. When did you start playing your instrument?

A. Liza: I first started playing the trumpet in the eighth grade. My brother played it too and I liked it.

Brendan: I began playing the piano in the first grade because my parents made me, but I have continued because I like it. I started playing the French horn in the fifth grade. “Star Wars” music sounds great on the French horn and features a lot of parts for the instrument. I then began playing the banjo in the seventh grade and the ukulele in the 10th grade since I thought they would be fun to learn. In the eighth grade, I started playing the Mellophone for marching band.

Kayla: I started playing the mellophone in my freshman year and the baritone in my sophomore year. I really enjoy playing these instruments.

Q. Best memory of being in band/marching band?

A. Liza: My best memory of marching band are all the football games and playing at halftime.

Brendan: I really enjoyed attending Massillon Band Nights – it was a great experience.

Kayla: I will always remember Massillon Band Nights. It always felt like all of our hard work paid off after performing at Massillon.

Q. Why is music important to you?

A. Liza: Music is important to me because it is full of emotion and you can learn a lot from it. I particularly liked the “80’s Medley” that we played.

Brendan: I really enjoyed playing the “8o’s Medley,” since music from the 80’s is great.

Kayla: It’s expressive and fun. My favorite was my freshman year marching band shows.

Q. If you were speaking to a group of fifth-grade students who were thinking of joining the band, what would you tell them is the number 1 reason for joining the band?

A. Liza: Band is a lot of fun and you learn a lot from it.

Brendan: The people you become friends with in band are some of the best friends you will have.

Kayla: Socially it is awesome. You meet amazing and genuine people in every grade, and you become close friends with them.

Q. What college do you hope to attend/intended major?

A. Liza: I am undecided on my field of study, but I would like to attend Cleveland State.

Brendan: I am currently undecided, but I will probably do something with music.

Kayla: I would like to attend YSU and I am undecided on my major at this time.
