Youngstown to honor Sister Jerome as Grand Marshal of holiday parade

The city announced Tuesday that Sister Jerome Corcoran, founder of Sister Jerome’s Poor, Millcreek Children’s Center and the Youngstown Community School, will be honored as the grand marshal at the holiday parade and Christmas tree lighting Dec. 4.

“Sister Jerome is known to many as ‘The Nun who Gets Things Done!’ As she approaches her 100th birth[day] she is still going strong,” said Michael McGiffin, who is in charge of downtown events and citywide special projects, in a release. “She has dedicated much of her life to giving the opportunity of a good education to all students no matter their economic, social or racial status.”

Sister Jerome will turn 100 in April.

The Dec. 4 event begins at 4:30 p.m. with live caroling, and food and holiday vendors on Central Square and 20 Federal Place. The parade begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by the tree lighting at 6:30 p.m.

Other activities include a photo opportunity with Santa Claus, a “Dueling Pianos” event at 7:30 p.m. at Suzie’s Dogs & Drafts hosted by YSU Student Activities, free admission OH WOW! Children’s Center from 4 to 8 p.m., and “Ugly Sweater Night” at the Covelli Centre hosted by the Youngstown Phantoms.
