FIRST UNITARIAN CHURCH COOKBOOK

Hot Walnut Scones

21/3cup sifted cake flour

21/2teaspoons baking powder

3/4teaspoon salt

1tablespoon sugar

1/2cup shortening

1/2cup finely chopped walnuts

1/2cup milk

2eggs

2tablespoons sugar

Sift flour, baking powder, salt and 1 tablespoon sugar into medium mixing bowl. Cut in shortening until like corn meal. Stir in nuts. Add milk or cream. Separate 2 eggs, reserve 1 tablespoon of egg white. Beat rest of the egg with second egg; add to flour mixture. On a lightly floured surface, roll dough into diamond shape 1/2 inch thick. Cut into 3 strips of equal size, running parallel to one of the sides. Cut into 3 strips, parallel with other side, making 9 smaller diamonds. Or roll dough to inch thickness, cut into 3 inch squares. Cut each square into 2 triangles. Arrange on a greased cookie sheet and brush with slightly beaten egg white. Sprinkle with 2 tablespoons sugar and bake in preheated oven at 450 degrees for 10 to 15 minutes or until done. Serve hot. Makes 9 to 12 scones.

Bacon Tomato Dip

13-ounce package cream cheese, softened

1/2cup sour cream

1/2teaspoon Beau Monde seasoning

1/2teaspoon dry mustard

6slices crisp bacon, crumbled

1medium tomato, peeled, seeded and finely chopped

In a small bowl, mix cream cheese, sour cream, Beau Monde and mustard; blend well. Stir in bacon and tomato. Cover and chill. Garnish with bacon and parley. Serve with vegetables and crackers.
