Registered dietician and community educator Bridget Lackey will lead an informational discussion and answer questions about “Healthy Eating for You: Eating Mindfulness” from 5:30 to 7 p.m. today at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital, 1044 Belmont Ave.

Free prostate exams

Man Up Mahoning Valley, NEO Urology, Mercy Health Foundation Mahoning Valley and Mount Calvary Pentecostal Church are offering free prostate cancer screenings Dec. 1 for men age 40 and older from 5 to 7 p.m. at Mount Calvary Pentecostal Church, 1812 Oak Hill Ave.
Screenings consist of a digital rectal exam and prostate specific antigen (PSA) blood draw. Dinner will be provided to all men taking part. The event is open to the public, but registration is required. Call 330-480-3181.

HOWLAND
Mercy Health Youngstown, formerly Humility of Mary Health Partners, is offering free blood pressure, blood sugar and blood cholesterol screenings (finger stick) Dec. 1 from 10 a.m. until noon at the Howland SCOPE center, 8273 High St. NE.
Those wishing to take part should not eat or drink anything other than plain water for eight hours before the screening. Screenings are provided through Mercy Health’s Neighborhood Health Watch program and are first come, first served. For information, call 330-609-7806.
Diabetes education

Mercy Health Youngstown, formerly Humility of Mary Health Partners, is offering a three-day diabetes education seminar from 6 to 8:30 p.m. in classroom No. 1 at St. Joseph Warren Hospital, 667 Eastland Ave., on Dec. 1, 2 and 3.
The classes will be repeated Dec. 8, 9 and 10 from 9 to 11:30 a.m. at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital. Registration is required. Call 330-480-2676.
Health-care professionals who teach the course, which is certified by the American Diabetes Association, focus on the medical aspects of the disease such as medications, glucose monitoring, exercise and complications during the first session. The second and third sessions focus on learning to plan meals, count carbohydrates, interpret food labels and make positive food choices.
“These classes provide participants with the knowledge they need to manage their diabetes and avoid the long-term complications the disease can cause,” says Kay Leonhart, manager, diabetes education, Mercy Health Youngstown.
Pediatric surgeon joins Akron Children’s Hospital

Pediatric surgeon Dr. Avraham Schlager, has joined Akron Children’s Hospital. He will provide outpatient and inpatient pediatric surgical care and perform surgeries at the hospital’s Akron and Beeghly campuses, as well as Akron Children’s affiliate site at MetroHealth Medical Center.
Earning his medical degree from Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York, Dr. Schlager completed training in general surgery at New York University Medical Center and pediatric surgery at Emory University/Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. He is board-certified by the American Board of Surgery. Dr. Schlager lives in Beachwood.
