Submit details on Christmas services

The Vindicator will publish a listing of area services that are open to the public in observance of Christmas Eve and Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day.

The list will run on the Religion page on Dec. 19.

The deadline to submit information is 5 p.m. Dec. 16.

Information should include the denomination and complete name of the church, address, city or suburb and time of Christmas Eve and/or Christmas Day and New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day services. The information should be accompanied by a name and a phone number for verification or any questions.

Lessons and carols

YOUNGSTOWN

St. Columba Cathedral will present its annual Advent Procession of Lessons and Carols at 7 p.m. Nov. 29.

The service will feature the Cathedral Choir directed by Dr. Daniel Laginya, cathedral lectors coordinated by Laura Elder, and students of the parish led by Sister Martha Reed. The program is based on the ancient, traditional “O Antiphons” and will culminate with the Annunciation narrative.

The evening will be dedicated to the Rev. Ed Brienz in thanksgiving for his many years of pastoral leadership in the cathedral parish.

The event is free and open to the public. Security and free parking provided. A reception will follow in St. Columba Hall.

Guest speaker

WARREN

St. John Paul II Parish, 420 North St. NW, will host guest speaker, the Rev. James McKarns, from 3 to 4 p.m. Nov. 29, the first Sunday of Advent. His topic, “Lead Me Lord: Walking the Beatitude Pathway through Advent,” will give explanations and examples of each of the nine beatitudes and discuss how we can live them in our daily spirituality.

Father McKarns is a retired priest of the Diocese of Youngstown. He presents missions and retreats and is the author of several books, including “Lean Against the Wind,” “Seldom Told Bible Tales” and “Saints & Seasons.”

Benedictine Sisters of the Byzantine Church at Queen of Heaven Monastery, 169 Kenmore Ave. NE, plan a Spirituality Day from 1 to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 12 at Sts. The Rev. Thom Dansak, retired U.S. Navy chaplain, will speak on “Let’s Not Forget Joseph.” He will focus on the spouse of Mary and the earthly father of Jesus.

A priest for 42 years, he has a master’s in sacred theology degree from St. Mary’s Seminary in Baltimore. He served in the Navy for 30 years including service at bases in the United States, Japan, the Philippines, Guam, Puerto Rico, Okinawa and Italy. He also served on the battleship USS Missouri and the aircraft carrier USS Independence. He retired from the Navy in 2007.

Blue Christmas

BOARDMAN

Westminister Presbyterian Church, 119 Stadium Drive, will conduct a “Blue Christmas” service at 7 p.m. Dec. 1. Christmas, a season of joy, may be a sad time for those grieving deaths of loved ones or struggling with issues. The service will offer support and encouragement.
