Canfield High School seniors and varsity soccer players Heather Haley and Jeff Joseph wanted to raise breast cancer awareness for their National Honor Society service projects, so they organized a Pink Out during the girls junior varsity and varsity soccer games against Mentor Lake Catholic on Oct. 15, and the boys junior varsity and varsity soccer games against Hubbard on Oct. 17.

Haley and Joseph sold pink T-shirts during high school lunch periods leading up to the Pink Outs and at the Canfield Cardinals varsity football game Oct. 9.

Through the Pink Outs, Haley, daughter of Gary and Kim Haley, and Joseph, son of Jeff and Denise Joseph, raised money for Yellow Brick Place, a cancer wellness center for the tri-county area, and the Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center.

Yellow Brick Place, founded by President Donna Detwiler and Vice President Anna Aey, provides support to cancer survivors, families and caregivers. The Joanie Abdu Comprehensive Breast Care Center delivers accurate prevention, early detection, diagnosis and support services available in an environment of compassionate and coordinated care.

“This has been a great experience for me from something as simple as selling t-shirts. It is a good feeling to be able to make a difference and help people and bring a community together for such a great cause as breast cancer awareness. To see all the people at the game wearing the t-shirts we made is amazing. And all the support we have received has been overwhelming,” Joseph said.

Players on both the boys junior varsity and varsity and girls junior varsity and varsity wore donated pink jerseys for their respective games. All junior varsity and varsity players were announced prior to their games and cancer dedications to loved ones were announced for all players.

“It is such a great, warm feeling to be able to raise awareness and donate money to raise breast cancer awareness. This disease has affected so many people and knowing we are helping people and helping to possibly find a cure is a great feeling. This has been a heartwarming experience for me,” Haley said.

Sponsors and donors included Simon Roofing, the Campana family, The Kidney Group, Titan LED, Jeffrey A. Joseph Co., LPA, PNC Bank, J&M Car Wash, Cortland Banks, Farmer’s Trust, Canfield Soccer Boosters, in memory of Tom Davison, DeAngelo Orthodontics, Advanced Dermatology and Skin Cancer Center, the Accordino family and Danielle Marie Hodge Scholarship.

Huffman Fruit Farm of Salem and Knauf Harvest of Canfield donated pumpkins, which Mary Ellen Campana then painted to look like pink soccer balls in support of the Pink Out. Along with the pumpkins, Panera pink ribbon bagels, pink cupcakes, made by Campana, and homemade buckeyes were available for purchase.

Prior to the girls varsity Pink Out game, Ashlyn Cleevely, Gianna Campana, Heather Haley, Lauren Slanker and Danna Atway, sang the National Anthem. The girls are soccer team members who are also members of the Canfield High School choir.

During the game, the Chick-Fil-A cow mascot from Southern Park Mall was in attendance passing out prizes, and during introductions of the varsity players, FC Canfield youth soccer players were also announced and ran on the field with a varsity player.
