CANFIELD

Hilltop Elementary School’s Parent-Teacher Organization chairwoman showed plans for a new playground to the school board.

Julie Miller had a diagrammed proposal Wednesday night to preview some of the plans she has to raise money for the project.

The estimated cost is $300,000, with $40,000 already raised by various PTO fundraisers.

Miller said she’s hoping through community involvement and fundraising, both within the school and the greater Canfield area, she can accomplish the first phase – tearing down the central play area and building a new one by the start of the next school year.

“This is not just for Hilltop. ... I hope we can make this a community involvement and make this an exciting community event that the kids can benefit from,” she said.

Superintendent Alex Geordan said he was happy to announce the board’s partnership and sponsorship agreement with North American Dental Group: a five-year lease with a donation of $20,000, not only for funding the new scoreboard for Canfield High School girls’ softball team, but also high-tech mouth guards to cut down on the possibility of concussions.

“The hot topic these days and much concern in parents’ minds is our youngster’s brains and concussions. These mouth guards, they’re not the $5 mouth guards. ... It does eliminate a certain threat to the concussions. This agreement adds to that – it’s not only financial,” Geordan said.

Canfield schools received $10,495 in donations for the month which will go to various extra-curricular activities offered to students.

Additional expenditures were approved to improve school buildings, including $7,000 for a roof and $4,600 for repairing brickwork by the high school fieldhouse.
