HUBBARD

City council has approved $48,800 for the cleanup of Mud Run Creek.

The city accepted the low bid from X-Press Underground Inc. of Petersburg for the removal of settlement and debris at the creek at a council session earlier this week.

Mayor John Darko said it is necessary to periodically clean the creek in order to prevent erosion and overflow, which could lead to flooding on the city’s north side.

Mud overflow from the creek after a severe storm in July 2003 forced several North Main Street businesses to temporarily close.

Darko said a start date has not yet been set for the creek cleanup project, but the city will make sure it’s underway before inclement weather begins.

In other business, council authorized final passage of an ordinance increasing the compensation of the mayor’s secretary.

The salary will increase by $915 to $31,415 in 2016, which is a 3 percent increase, and to $32,357 in 2017, which is another 3 percent increase.

Additionally, council authorized the board of control to enter into a contract with Guy Latessa Insurance Agency Inc. and Arthur J. Gallagher Risk Management Services Inc. for the purchase of insurance policies for the city, spanning policy years 2016 to 2018.
