Ohio police advisory group gets update on training changes

LONDON, Ohio

An Ohio police relations advisory group has been updated on changes in law- enforcement training six months after making an initial series of recommendations.

The task force created by Attorney General Mike DeWine recommended in April that Ohio boost the minimum number of required training hours for officers and use stricter screening for applicants.

Officials with the state’s police training academy in London, west of Columbus, updated the task force Thursday about the status of all 25 of its recommendations.

DeWine convened the panel in response to fatal police shootings and protests over those events in Ohio and nationally.

Some recommendations led to an increase in the minimum number of training hours for new officers and requirements that candidates for law-enforcement jobs have a high school diploma.
