MEDINA, Ohio

A middle school student accused of stealing $25,000 from his 83-year-old grandfather and handing out $100 bills to classmates has been charged as a juvenile.

The Medina Gazette reports the boy was charged with delinquency by way of theft from the elderly.

Authorities say the 13-year-old distributed thousands of dollars last month before schools officials discovered what was happening. Investigators recovered some of the money, and some already had been spent.

The newspaper says a teenage friend also faces a delinquency count related to receiving stolen property after police determined he received cash and gave it to his grandparents, who took the teens on a shopping spree.

The county prosecutor says those grandparents haven’t been charged.

It’s not clear if the boys have attorneys.
