Construction of the new Trumbull County Veterans Service Commission offices will be ready to start in the coming weeks after county commissioners awarded a $1.5 million contract Tuesday to Hudson Construction of Hermitage, Pa.

The 7,000-square-foot building will be constructed on county-owned land on East Market Street across from the former Gibson Building that the city of Warren bought recently for city offices.

The contract calls for construction to be complete in 160 days, a little more than five months.

Herman Breuer, director and service officer for the commission, said the size of the project grew from 4,000 square feet to 7,000 square feet when he and Commissioner Paul Heltzel, who is now deceased, visited several other veterans service commission offices and saw how important it is to have a community room and vehicle parking.

The meeting room will make it possible for local veterans’ organizations to have a place to meet and for the Veterans Service Commission to sponsor events.

The commission has offices in the Job and Family Services office building on North Park Avenue, but it has only 2,800 square feet of space and very little parking, Breuer said.
