COLUMBUS, Ohio

Columbus police say an officer shot and killed an armed man who attacked while the officer was taking a police report about threats the man’s family said he had made against them.

Police officials say 42-year-old Jason L. Smith returned to the home in the 4600 block of Summit Street, on the city’s near north side, around 6 p.m. Saturday while the officer was inside collecting information from family members about Smith’s threats.

Authorities say Smith entered the residence and immediately began assaulting the officer. During their struggle, Smith reached for his handgun and that’s when the officer shot him. Smith was pronounced dead at the scene.

The officer’s name was not released. As in all such cases, an investigation and mandatory psychological support counseling will take place.
