Seavey keeps Iditarod trophy in the family

NOME, Alaska

Dallas Seavey raced his dogsled over the Iditarod finish line in Nome, Alaska, Wednesday, soundly winning over his closest competitor - his father, Mitch.

The younger Seavey, 28, made the 1,575 km wilderness trek in 8 days, 18 hours, 13 minutes and 6 seconds. The time is a full six hours longer than his record-setting winning run in 2014. In a race that this year drew competitors from seven countries on three continents, the Seaveys, from Willow, Alaska, have managed for years to keep the trophy local. Dallas Seavey won the race in 2012, then gave it up to his father in 2013 before winning again in 2014 and 2015.

This year, nine of 78 mushers quit.
