Ursuline Sisters offer Summer Service Learning Program

Staff report

CANFIELD

The Ursuline Sisters of Youngstown is accepting applications for the Summer Service Learning Program and one 2015-16 AmeriCorps Service position.

For the Summer Service Learning Program, college students and those graduating this semester are encouraged to apply. College graduates may apply for the AmeriCorps position.

“Both programs are a great way for students to gain experience and build their resumes, but also because they’re serving others in meaningful work in our ministries,” said Sister Norma Raupple, vocations and Young Adult Outreach Ministry director. The program offers a faith dimension.

This summer marks the fourth that the Ursuline Sisters is offering the program. It has doubled in size of participants since its inception, with many of the students returning each summer and during the year for other service projects with the sisters.

Students serve in several of the sisters’ nonprofits, such as Beatitude House, Casa Madre, Ursuline Preschool and Kindergarten.

“Our AmeriCorps position offers an exciting year where the participant will serve in a variety of ministries and situations,” Sister Norma said.

This is the first year the group is offering the AmeriCorps Service Position. “Our AmeriCorps position is an opportunity for a very rewarding experience. There’s a growing trend that more college graduates want to perform a year of service in gratitude for all they’ve received,” she said.
