City cop escapes injury from motorist

YOUNGSTOWN

Reports said a Canfield man almost ran over a city police officer working a traffic detail at Market Street and Falls Avenue about 5:20 p.m. Wednesday.

Lt. William Ross was walking back to his cruiser after pulling a car over when a car driven by Scott Bowden, 30, of Glenview Road, swerved. Ross pressed himself against the side of his cruiser and the car passed him. Ross and others then tried to pull Bowden over but he did not stop until he got to Hughes Street.

Reports said Bowden said he knew he almost hit an officer and was throwing drugs out of the car and swallowing some. Police took Bowden into custody but he would not be accepted into the Mahoning County jail until he was treated at St. Elizabeth Youngstown Hospital for the drugs. Bowden was booked on charges of felonious assault, possession of drugs and also a warrant for failure to appear in municipal court.
