Hoover to speak at library

Meet Dean Hoover from a Plakie Toy at the Austintown Branch of the Youngstown Library at The Friends of the Austintown library meeting. Hoover will present the history of the Plakie toy company 10 a.m. on June 22. Hoover’s father was the founder of a 2 million dollar per year toy business in Youngstown. The Plakie line of toys was found in homes and nurseries all over the nation. The meeting is open to the public and will take place in the community room of the library on Raccoon Road.

Patterson named to honor society

The National Society of High School Scholars recently announced that Austintown Fitch High School student Victoria A. Patterson has been selected to become a member of the organization. The society recognizes top scholars who have demonstrated outstanding leadership, scholarship and community commitment.

The Amazing History Race: Mahoning Valley

Join the Mahoning Valley Historical Society on June 26 for a scavenger hunt meets road trip and a summer evening testing your knowledge of local history. Individuals or teams will begin their vehicular adventure at The Tyler History Center, located at 325 West Federal Street in downtown Youngstown, with an opening clue directing them to one of six different landmark sites spread throughout the Valley. Successive clues will be handed out at each location, and not to worry, there will be a “lifeline” available for those who are stumped along the way. The final clue will lead you to the finish line for a casual pizza party with soft drinks (other beverages are BYOB). Austintown Farmers’ Market launches season

The Austintown Farmer’s Market, located at Austintown Township Park (6000 Kirk Road, Austintown, 44515), started off the 2015 on June 15 from 5-8 p.m., rain or shine. The market will run Mondays through the summer. Crafts, food, produce, plants and more will be available. SNAP benefits are accepted on food purchases. Vendors to be included (subject to change) are Bandana Dogs, Beach Glass by Tracy, Blue Grass Kitchen, Gardenview Acres, George’s Produce, Grass and Grace Farm, Hellenback Farms, Jackson Maters, Maple Leaf Acres, Moe’s Seasoning, Patti’s Natural Gifts, Vestal Concessions (Kettle Corn) and Zimmerman Farms.

Students on Dean’s List at University of Akron

More than 3,400 students made the spring 2015 Dean’s List at the University of Akron. Students from Austintown to achieve this distinction are Courtney Dockry, Haley Hunter, Elizabeth Mosier, Ralph-Isaac Testa, Meghan Delaney, Stephen Marshall and Taylor Marshall.

Akron names spring 2015 President’s List recipients

More than 800 University of Akron students have been named to the President’s List. To qualify, students must be undergraduate, enrolled full-time and achieve a 4.0 grade point average for the semester. Students from Austintown to achieve this distinction are Alexandra Hulick and Anny Carroll.

Soar into summer reading with “Michael Recycle”

Join Peg Flynn and Kim Lewis of the Mahoning County Green Team as they present Ellie Bethel’s book, “Michael Recycle,” at the Austintown library during the summer reading program on July 6 at 11 a.m. This adventurous tale is about a young superhero who visits a garbage-infested town called “Abberdoo-Rimey” and teaches its residents how to clean up and recycle. After reading the story, program participants will create decorative candy dishes using recovered plastic bottles and stickers. At the conclusion of the program, everyone will receive an Eco-Superheroes coloring book and information to share with their parents. This program is recommended for children in pre-K through grade 3.

Pre-K story time

This program is for 4- and 5-year-olds to help develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. The Austintown library will use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready on July 1 at 11:30 a.m.

Bonding with babies and books

This event, for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-3 months old, will take place at the Austintown library every Tuesday in the month of July at 10 a.m. There will be twenty minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Austintown library for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader on July 1 at 10 a.m.. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

“Frozen” summer party

It’s hot outside, so cool off at the Austintown library’s “frozen” extravaganza on July 8 at 11 a.m. Join the library for games, crafts, music, snacks and ice cubes of fun. This event is for children of all ages.

Crafting is my super power

Is it a bird? Is it a plane? No, it’s a super craft made by super children of all ages. This activity will take place at the Austintown library during regular library hours in the month of July.

Gotta move story time

This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the Austintown library for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning every Thursday in July at 10 a.m. Adults and children, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, and talk and play.

Guess ‘n’ go

Lego my library

Meet at the Austintown library on July 1 at 6 p.m. and July 24 at 2 p.m. and create Lego designs. Legos will be provided. This event is for children ages 6 and up.

“Teen Titans” book club

Join the “Teen Titans” book club for summer reading fun in a book club format on July 9 at 2 p.m. at the Austintown library. Read cool books and offer your super power opinions. At the August meeting, they will have a book party to end the summer with a “POW.” This event is for grades 7-12.

Superhero selfie photo booth

Visit the Austintown library’s teen area and use its props and background to style your photo during regular library hours in the month of July. This event is for those in grades 7-12.

Boardman Park hosts free concerts

It’s time to pack up your blankets and lawn chairs and head out to Boardman Park’s Maag Outdoor Theatre for some local entertainment at Music in the Park. Stamping with Cindy

Summer Picnic Program

In partnership with Neighborhood Ministries, the Austintown library will be a site offering lunch to school-age children who need something to eat during the day. Visit the library from June 15 through Aug. 20, Monday-Thursday from 12:30-1:30 p.m., for a lunch you can eat in the library. This event is for school-age children in kindergarten through grade 12.

Spinasaurus Encounter at the Austintown library

The Carnegie Museum of Natural history will be presenting “Spinasaurus Encounter” at the Austintown library on June 25 at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. The Carnegie Museum of Natural History will be bringing its life-sized Spinosaurus and guiding participants on a journey back to the age of dinosaurs. This event is for children of all ages.

Spring cleaning kayak

Austintown accepts sealed pricing quotes

The Austintown Local School Board will accept sealed pricing quotes for the purchase of food for the 2015-2016 school year on June 24 at 10 a.m. Items include: dairy products, bread and bakery products. Jeff Harvey of Wild Birds Unlimited will lead this walk at Mill Creek Wildlife Sanctuary on June 20 from 8-9:30 a.m. Boots are required. Register at Ford Nature Center by June 19.

Every hero has a story

The Summer Discovery program for children will be ”every hero has a story” and will take place at the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County. Children will have an opportunity to earn incentives by reading or completing activities or a combination of both. Children will receive a free ice cream cone from Dairy Queen and a Mahoning Valley Scrappers game voucher just for signing up. When they complete five activities, children get a choice of paperback books. On completing 10 activities, they receive an incentive and for children ages 3 and up, they will get a free admission to OH WOW! When they complete 15 activities, they will be into a drawing for a gift card. And children who complete 20 activities by July 25 will earn a chance to have breakfast with author David Catrow, creator of the Max Spaniel books, in July.

Ursuline Center: summer series of spirituality

Sister Nancy Pawlen from the Ursuline Center will lead summer series of spirituality class on Experiencing Sacred Space on Aug. 12. Chaney class of 1965 to have reunion

The Chaney High School Class of 1965 50th annual reunion will take place at Mr. Anthony’s in Boardman on July 31. The cost, which includes dinner, is $40 per person. The class will also host a picnic on Aug. 1 at Slippery Rock Pavillion in Millcreek Park. The cost for the picnic is $10 per person. Gamblers Anonymous

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Safe Sitter classes set for this summer

Safe Sitter teaches boys and girls ages 11-13 how to be ideal babysitters. The two-day course covers basic first aid, rescue breathing, accident prevention, childcare tips, what to do if a child chokes and how and when to call for help. Cost for the program is $28.50 and scholarships are available for those who meet financial eligibility requirements. Neighborhood Ministries is sseeking churches to provide free meals

Neighborhood Ministries, a sponsor for the Summer Food Service Program, is seeking churches or organizations to join in providing free meals to children ages 18 and under who live in the Youngstown area. The meals are provided by the U.S. Department of Agriculture through the Ohio Department of Education from June 8 – Aug. 21. Simply Slavic call for vendors

The fifth annual Simply Slavic festival will be on June 20 from 12-11 p.m. on Federal Plaza East. Organizers are seeking authentically Slavic retail, craft, fine art and food vendors for its marketplace and food tents. Simply Slavic has vending space for 15 food vendors and 10 marketplace vendors who will provide a variety of Slavic merchandise and foods for patrons during the festival. Friends Specialty at the Garden Caf in Mill Creek MetroParks Fellows Riverside Gardens has officially opened for business. The Garden Caf has been refreshed and newly updated and will offer an eclectic selection of teas, locally roasted coffee, a locally sourced lunch menu, desserts and other libations all served with a complimentary view of stunning Lake Glacier. The Caf is open to the public from Tuesday through Sunday during the hours of 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. for pastries, coffee and tea.
