Advisories posted at Lake Erie beaches

CLEVELAND

Heavy rain overwhelmed the sewer system in Northeast Ohio this week, discharging raw sewage into Lake Erie and leading to water advisories at a number of beaches.

The torrential rain Monday led to swimming advisories at Edgewater Park beach in Cleveland and nearly a dozen other beaches along the lake shore.

Visitors were being advised to avoid contact with the water and debris. Officials say high levels of E. coli bacteria could sicken children, the elderly and those in ill health if the water is ingested.

Tiger kills man after floods damage zoo

TBILISI, Georgia

A tiger that broke loose after severe flooding at the Tbilisi Zoo mauled a man to death in the Georgian capital before being shot by police Wednesday, a day after officials said all the zoo’s tigers had died. Zoo Director Zurab Gurielidze acknowledged he was to blame for releasing faulty information and said new counts indicated a tiger cub and a hyena could still be on the loose. The city has remained on edge, with runaway predators reportedly seen by some residents.

The Interior Ministry in the former Soviet republic said the tiger was hiding at an abandoned factory that had been turned into a construction market when he attacked the man Wednesday. The victim, who worked at the market, later died of his wounds at a hospital.

2 boys rescue kids from burning home

OAKLAND, Fla.

Typical of their hot summer days free from school, 11-year-old Jeremiah Grimes and 10-year-old Isiah Francis were watching YouTube and playing video games, but Tuesday they smelled something unusual and saw smoke streaming from the home next door.

As Jeremiah put on his shoes, Isiah ran next door, where he encountered the neighbor frantically searching for water to douse the flames. The man said two young children were in the kitchen. Isiah went inside and, with Jeremiah’s guidance, plucked the 1-year-old and 8-month-old from the burning home. Two other children in the home were rescued by firefighters who arrived moments later, after Jeremiah called 911.

2nd man is charged in possible IS plot

NEW YORK

A second college student was arrested Wednesday in the investigation of a purported plot to support the Islamic State group by using homemade explosives to attack New York City targets.

Fereed Mumuni, 21, was ordered held without bail on attempted-murder charges accusing him of trying to kill an FBI agent with a large kitchen knife in a struggle while agents were executing a search warrant at his Staten Island home. The agent escaped serious harm thanks to his body armor, authorities said.

After his arrest, Mumuni told investigators he had pledged allegiance to the Islamic State, according to government papers.
