Chiefs’ Berry cleared to return

ST. JOSEPH, Mo.

Pro Bowl safety Eric Berry has been cleared by the Kansas City Chiefs’ medical staff and his doctors to return to the practice field after undergoing treatment for lymphoma.

The Chiefs said in a brief statement late Tuesday that Berry would join quarterbacks, rookies and injured players in the first day of training camp Wednesday at Missouri Western.

Berry was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease last December, shortly after complaining of pain in his chest following a game against Oakland. He was treated at Emory University in Atlanta and went through the final round of it in June.

Berry underwent a battery of tests Tuesday, when rookies and select veterans reported to training camp. He was cleared to take the field late in the day.

Red Sox retire Martinez’s 45

BOSTON

The script called for Jason Varitek to remain in the dugout until it was time for the ceremonial first pitch.

Pedro Martinez was never one to follow the script.

Calling his former catcher out to join him in the center of the diamond, Martinez took the mound and the microphone one more time for the Red Sox during a pregame ceremony to retire the No. 45 he wore in Boston.

“Hey, this is Pedro,” the newly minted Hall of Famer told the crowd that interrupted the ceremony and the game to chant his name. “This is my parade.”

A three-time Cy Young Award winner who anchored the staff that helped the Red Sox win the 2004 World Series, Martinez was honored Tuesday night before Boston’s 9-4 loss to the Chicago White Sox. Two days after Martinez was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, David Ortiz waved his hand and a red curtain was removed to reveal the No. 45 on the Fenway facade.
