WILLIAMSPORT, PA.

Mark Mathias’ first-inning double helped spark a three-run rally to help the Mahoning Valley Scrappers defeat the Williamsport Crosscutters, 4-1, in Saturday’s New York-Penn League action.

Willi Castro and Ka’ai Tom opened the game with singles against Crosscutters starter Tyler Gilbert (0-1). Mathias’ double scored Castro and sent Tom to third base.

A wild pitch brought Tom home and advanced Mathias who came home on a ground out.

The Scrappers (10-17) made it a four-run lead in the third inning when Mathias tripled and scored on Emmanuel Tapia’s base hit.

Mathias finished with four hits and two runs scored. Tapia had two hits.

Kieran Lovegrove (1-2) picked up his first win by allowing one run in five-and-a-third innings. He allowed four hits, struck out six and walked three.

The Crosscutters are 20-8.
