Eastern Gateway Community College will get a $230,666 U.S. Department of Education grant to assist 160 low-income students.

U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan of Howland, D-13th, announced the college’s receipt of the grant Wednesday.

Kent State University received a $443,212 grant and Stark State College’s grant is for $231,103.

EGCC’s grant will go toward providing the students with advising, priority registration, financial aid and academic counseling, emotional support and role modeling, individual and group tutoring, career exploration and guidance and workshops to gain college, life and financial skills.

The college’s Pell Grant-recipient participants who meet USDOE Student Support Service Program requirements will receive a portion of grant aid to offset the expense of college.

The objectives of the grant are to see 60 percent of participants will persist from one academic year to the next; 75 percent will maintain good standing at EGCC, 25 percent will graduate within four years and 15 percent will transfer to a four-year university or college with an associate degree or certificate.
