Amateur bakers sought for local Cupcake War

If your creative treats are the envy of your friends and family then it is time to test your skills in front of a larger audience. Organizers of the Sweet Life Cupcake Competition are looking for amateur bakers for its annual charity competition.

The competition is comprised of five categories which will be tasted and scored by a panel of judges. The categories are classic, savory and freestyle, and the themes this year are “My Little Bride” and “Under the Big Top.” Competitors can choose to enter any or all categories. The entry fee is $15 for up to three categories and $5 for each additional category. Participants will be judged and winners awarded on Feb. 27. All competitors will have their entries displayed as part of the main event the next day.

The Sweet Life Cupcake Competition is a family friendly event to take place on Feb. 28 from 11 a.m. until 3 p.m. at The Georgetown on South Avenue in Youngstown and benefits the Friends of the Mahoning Valley Birth Center. Advance purchase tickets are priced at $9 for adults and $2 for children. At the door, standard ticket prices are adults $12 and children $3. Toddlers and infants under 3-years-old are free. Tickets can be purchased online at mvbcfriends.com and Eventbrite.

This tasty contest features bakers from throughout region competing for the right to say they have the best looking and tasting cupcakes around. The professional bakeries include The Bakery Box, The Cake Boutique, Clarencedale Cake, Dizzy B’s Cafe and Bakery, The Graceful Baker, Sugar Mama’s, Sugarypan Bakery and Sweets by June, The professional competitors will be judged by a panel of three judges per category to determine the winners based on taste and presentation. There will additionally be an audience choice award voted on by attendees at the event.

Guests get to marvel at the displays, sample cupcakes, vote for their favorites, enjoy music by Dynomyte Entertainment, take some cupcakes home and even create their own cupcake masterpiece at the Cupcake Creation Station sponsored by Kravitz Delicatessen. Basket, silent auctions and cash bar will be available. Photography will be done by Suzanne Bobosky Photography. Donations and sponsorship opportunities are currently being offered.

Formed in 2012, Friends of the Mahoning Valley Birth Center is a non-profit group created to enhance area families’ pregnancy and birth experiences and to support new mothers in caring for themselves and their children.
