Cleveland police find toddler alone after mother’s overdose

CLEVELAND (AP) — Police detectives are credited with tracking down a 2-year-old girl who was found alone in an apartment after her mother died of a presumed heroin overdose.

A Cleveland police spokesman said Thursday that three detectives from the department’s heroin-involved death investigation team responded to a call about a woman dead inside a car earlier this week.

Detectives found a slip of paper with a man’s name and an address in a nearby suburb during a search of the car as they tried to determine who they should notify about the 33-year-old woman’s death.

The man no longer lived at that address, but that’s where detectives found the 2-year-old alone and crying but otherwise unharmed. Detectives fed the toddler and turned her over to the Cuyahoga County child welfare agency.
