CANFIELD

In today’s fast-paced world of drive-through meals and frozen dinners, Piccadilly Parlour is a portal to a bygone era of lacy tablecloths, afternoon tea and finger sandwiches.

With soft music playing on the stereo and charming Victorian d cor that celebrates the small details (right down to the real sugar cubes on every table), the restaurant’s atmosphere is immediately soothing, lavish and special.

“Dining here is a lifetime memory,” said owner Claudia Zacharko. “People take their time here. On average, customers stay for one and a half to two hours. This is a place to slow down and savor every detail, to feel special, to enjoy.”

It’s easy to savor the details when Piccadilly serves up such sumptuous fare — dainty salads, delicious quiches and charming sandwiches.

I started out with a steaming cup of cinnamon spice tea and two scones served with fresh clotted cream and homemade raspberry jam ($6.79).

When most people think of scones, they picture bread that is crisp and crumbly. Piccadilly’s scones, however, are soft and warm, and when paired with the fresh clotted cream, which is divinely sweet, and the tart-yet-sugary jam, this dish is a little slice of heaven for your palette.

Piccadilly Parlour serves teas that come straight from England, and the quality and variety are decadent. Chocolate mint, orange spice, strawberry, vanilla, pumpkin spice, peach melba, meyer lemon — the list goes on, and the flavors are sublime. Tea is $3.29 per two-cup pot or $6.29 per six-cup pot.

Speaking of teapots, the china teapots used at Piccadilly are individual and ornate, as are the delicate cups and saucers. Zacharko said regular customers sometimes have particular china they adore and will request certain teacups and certain teapots.

“It’s another detail that makes the experience of dining here so special,” she said.

After enjoying my tea and scones, I next sampled a medley of miniature tea sandwiches and desserts known affectionately as “Tea for Two.” Served on a two-tiered plate stand, this arrangement looks as lovely as it tastes ($14.79 per person).

The crusts are cut off these delicate sandwiches, which include traditional cucumber, egg salad, chicken salad and tuna salad. The medley also offers two slivers of quiche, walnut cream cheese wedges, sweet breads, petite cheesecakes and chocolate-covered strawberries and is served with a cup of soup and a pot of tea or your favorite beverage.

Zacharko said Tea for Two is the most popular item at Piccadilly Parlour.

“This is what we are known for right here,” she said.

After nibbling the delicacies of Tea for Two, I sampled another Piccadilly specialty: Lady Claudia’s Croissant.

This fresh, flaky croissant is served with either chicken salad or albacore tuna salad along with lettuce, tomato and fresh fruit ($10.29), and it is delicious and filling.

Other specialties on the menu include Lady Lily’s Vegetable Lasagna ($10.29), which features white cheeses and a delicious medley of vegetables; Sir Wellington’s Quiche ($10.39); and Homemade Pierogi ($10.29).

Favorite appetizers (in addition to the aforementioned Victorian scones) include orange tea bread ($4.29) and homemade spinach artichoke dip ($6.79).

A variety of salads grace the menu, including the Piccadilly Fruit Salad ($6.79), which features a bowl of fresh cut fruit topped with yogurt, honey and almonds; the Oolong Oriental Chicken salad ($10.79), which includes grilled chicken breast atop romaine lettuce, water chestnuts, mandarin oranges, oriental noodles and cashews in sesame dressing; and the Rosamund Salad ($10.79), which features grilled chicken atop romaine along with sliced strawberries, red onions, slivered almonds and a raspberry vinaigrette dressing.

Piccadilly Parlour also has a children’s menu and is an established location for children’s birthday parties. A small section of the restaurant is reserved for such events and boasts a wardrobe and chest that are crowded with frocks and hats and other whimsical sundries so young ladies and gentlemen can transform into elegant princesses and dapper gents for an afternoon of fun.

The tearoom is available for children’s parties Monday through Friday after 5 p.m. Children are given a lesson in etiquette before dining and partake in a craft session followed by traditional birthday cake.

The restaurant also is a popular place for bridal and baby showers and other special occasions.

Zacharko has owned Piccadilly Parlour since 2003. Her original plan was to open a Mexican restaurant because she learned traditional Mexican cooking at home. However, she was smitten with Piccadilly Parlour the first time she visited and after learning it was for sale, she took the plunge.

“We prepare food that is made with love and also looks beautiful,” she said. “I try to create an atmosphere where people can feel special and create special memories. People come here to pamper themselves — to slow down, to savor, to enjoy.”
