Ohio deputies accused of slamming, kicking handcuffed man

Friday, January 16, 2015

CINCINNATI (AP) — Three sheriff’s deputies in southern Ohio have been indicted on charges they roughed up a handcuffed inmate.

Court documents say 36-year old Jeremy Hanshaw, 25-year-old Ronald Hatfield and 22-year-old Jason Mays slammed an inmate to the ground and held him in a chokehold during booking at Lawrence County Jail in August.

Records also say the deputies attempted to block a surveillance camera and struck the inmate’s head while he was restrained on a gurney.

Prosecutors say at least one deputy wrote false reports to justify the assault.

All three pleaded not guilty to felony counts of deprivation of rights under the color of law and conspiracy against civil rights.

Attorneys for Hanshaw and Mays say they’re reviewing evidence and will fight the charges. Messages were left for Hatfield’s attorney.
