Friday, January 16, 2015

On Dec. 31, runners in the 34th edition of the Crazy Lenny’s New Years Eve 5km Race found it sunny and windy with the temperature sitting at 15 degrees for the 11 a.m. start. Many former winners on both the men’s side and the women’s side returned to the race.

Current Youngstown State University runner Nick Gliha took advantage of his fitness and grabbed his first race title, adding his name to the line of winners of this event. Former overall winner John Mirth was the first male masters runner. Rich Oldrieve, the winner of the very first race in 1981 as a Cornell University runner, returned once again to the delight of race organizers.

On the women’s side, former Poland High School runner and current YSU runner McKinsie Klim picked up her first win, out distancing her sisters and the other women to grab her first victory. Eight time winner, Becky Rudzik was once again the first female masters this year.

Richard Mirth (78-years-old) was the oldest finisher again this year. At least 14 former Poland High School runners who graduated over the years since 1980 competed in the race this year. Former Poland runners, Lenny Cockman, founder of the race, and Phil Pillin did the race directing duties.
