Trooper resigns after report of sex in cruiser

An Ohio trooper who admitted having sex with a woman in a marked patrol car while on duty resigned as the State Highway Patrol moved to fire him, according to records released Wednesday.

Cody Nevers met the woman last summer at a crash scene where they chatted about a mutual interest in motorcycles, and they developed a relationship, according to records from the patrol’s administrative investigation. Eventually, he agreed to her request to have sex in the front seat of the cruiser, a 2014 Dodge Charger, at a roadside pull-off area while he worked overnight for the Mt. Gilead post in November.

They also met at other times while he was on duty, at a church parking lot and outside a veterinary clinic, but told investigators those meetings were just for conversations, not for sex.

The woman, who asked patrol investigators that she remain anonymous, reported her interactions with Nevers after learning he had a fiancee and was not single as she’d believed. Nevers, 23, was accused of conduct unbecoming an officer and resigned in late January after a little more than two years as a trooper.

Nevers has no public phone listing. A lawyer for his union, the Ohio State Troopers Association, said it represented Nevers during the administrative investigation, but said she doesn’t have permission to speak on his behalf.

The patrol’s spokesman, Lt. Craig Cvetan, said Nevers’ actions fell short of the public’s high expectations for a state trooper.

“The patrol does not tolerate behavior like Nevers’ amongst our ranks,” Cvetan said in a statement.

Nevers told an investigator he never neglected a call for service because he was with the woman, according to the interview records. He also noted that he never removed his duty belt during their sexual encounter and took off his portable radio but left the patrol car radio on.
