BPJWL to meet March 2
The next meeting of the Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will be on March 2 at Glenellen Assisted Living, located at 9661 Market St. in Boardman, at 7 p.m. Members will be finalizing plans for the upcoming Quarter Auction on March 21 at St. Nicholas Social Hall at 6 p.m. Members can wear green in recognition of St. Patrick’s Day and to welcome Spring. Hostesses for the meeting are Sperry Rongone and Derrie Wilkes. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women over 18, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. BPJWL celebrates 35 years
The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. The league was established in 1979 and federated in 1980. Throughout the last 35 years BPJWL has raised more than $650,000 and donated it back to the local community. There will be a banquet on May 4 at Michael Alberinini’s in Boardman. Women Artists art exhibition
The YWCA Women Artists: A Celebration! Annual Art Exhibition showcases works by local, regional and national women artists, age 18 and older. Entry forms are available by calling 330-746-6361, ext. 102 or at ywca.org/youngstown. They are due no later than March 30. Artists may enter a maximum of five entries. There is a nonrefundable fee of $10 per entry or $45 for five entries. Entry is by CD only. This year’s juror is Susan Talbot-Stanaway, former director of the Zanesville Museum of Art, Zanesville. A preview party for the show will take place from 7-9 p.m. on June 20, at the YWCA. Proceeds from the art show benefit the YWCA Housing Programs.
Mardi Gras paws
Celebrate Mardi Gras with Legacy Dog Rescue as they host a Mardi Gras wine taste on Feb. 21 at Lil Paws Winery, located at 17547 Mahoning Ave. in Lake Milton, from 4–10 p.m. Admission is $10 for wine tasting, appetizers, desserts and classic Mardi Gras fare. Art sale
The YWCA of Youngstown will host an art sale from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. March 14 and 15 at the YWCA, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. This is an opportunity for artists to sell their artwork and for members of the community to purchase original art. The cost for artists is $10 per table. The YWCA will retain a 20 percent commission on all art sales. All artwork must be priced $100 or less. Artwork does not need to be framed. Artists under 18 will need a parent or guardian to reserve the table. Proceeds will benefit the Women Artists Annual Art Exhibition purchase of lighting. Tables are limited. Minenok named to Dean’s List
Taylor Marie Minenok, an alumni of Canfield High School, was named to the Fall 2014 Dean’s List at Youngstown State University. Minenok is majoring in Pre-Med.

Jordan Stefko and Jonathon Wagner from Canfield were name to Wake Forest University Dean’s List for the fall semester, 2014. Students who achieve a 3.4 grade point average and no grade below a “C” were named to the list.
Nomination accepted for Children’s Advocate Awards
Nominations are now being accepted for the annual Children’s Advocate Awards presented by Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. The purpose of these awards is to recognize individuals and organizations throughout the Mahoning Valley who exhibit the spirit of caring and who work to make a difference in the lives of the children of the communities we serve. Honorees will be recognized at the Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley “Champions for our Valley’s Children” Celebration Dinner on May 12 at The Lake Club. Canfield band goes to conference
The Canfield Local Schools and its band program was well represented at the Ohio Music Education Association (OMEA) Professional Development Conference on Feb. 6-8 in Cleveland. The brand new Cleveland Convention Center and Medical Mart was the perfect venue for 2,000 plus music educators from all across Ohio to attend great professional development sessions and concerts. Canfield High School had alumni, one current member and band director Michael Kelly actively involved in the three-day event.
Simon Roofing adds three locals to national sales team
Simon Roofing, a national manufacturer and installer of commercial roofing systems, floor resurfacing and concrete repair, recently expanded its national sales division with the addition of three Mahoning Valley natives. New national sales assistants working out of Simon Roofing’s corporate headquarters include Ben Kline of Canfield, Marisa Moro of Warren and Paula Schaefer of Niles. They are each responsible for identifying and qualifying national prospects, and assisting the vice president of national accounts with maintaining customer relationships across the country. Kline earned a bachelor’s degree in accounting and finance at Youngstown State University.
Tax preparation
The library will provide locations for free tax preparation and electronic filing for seniors and those (at any age) with low to moderate income. The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) Programs offer free tax help for taxpayers who qualify. Gotta Move Story Time
This event is for children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join the MetroParks Farm library for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development and motivate language learning. Adults and children should both be ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play at 10 a.m. on March 3, 17 and 31.

This event is for caregivers and their little ones who are 6-23 months at the MetroParks Farm library 10 a.m. on March 16. The event will offer twenty minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs, and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult.
Senior lunch in April
Lord of Life church in Canfield would like to invite all senior citizens to a lunch special on April 13. A lunch will take place on the second Monday of every month at 11 a.m. The lunch is free and donations are optional. There will be blood pressure screenings offered to all seniors and a presentation of spring gardening highlighting gardening issues and tips. This is a community outreach social program offered to all senior citizens with different games and activities offered each month. Spread the word and bring your friends. Senior pot luck event in March
Lord of Life Church in Canfield would like to welcome all senior citizens to a Pot Luck at 11 a.m. on March 9. Lunch attendees are asked to bring food to be shared. Easter egg hunt
An Easter egg hunt will be offered at Lord of Life Church, located at 550 North Broad Street in Canfield, on April 4 beginning at 10 a.m. All ages from infant through age 12 are welcome. The children are to bring a basket in which they will place the eggs that they find. The Easter Bunny is sure to make a guest appearance. The event will go forward rain or shine. Patti’s Night of Pampering to be Feb. 23
There will be a spa night for patients currently receiving chemotherapy or radiation and a guest on Feb. 23 from 6-8 p.m. at Salon@Creekside. The night of pampering will offer spa services as a small donation for guests ($1 - $2 donation per service), giveaways, hand scrubs and massages, wig and hairpiece display, eyebrow and eyelash application, a Livestrong instructor from YMCA and more. Money donated will go toward the Paneraton and the Jonie Abdu Foundation.
Gamblers Anonymous to meet
Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Learn about species and habitats
Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to learn about the National Audubon Society’s priority species and habitats. This program will be presented by Mandy Smith, the Education Manager at Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek MetroParks and formerly of Audubon Maryland-DC. 10th annual tasting fundraiser
The Youngstown Area Grocers Association will host its 10th Annual Beer and Wine Tasting fundraiser on March 20 from 6-9 p.m. at Stambaugh Auditorium, located at 1000 Fifth Ave. in Youngstown. Tickets are $50 each or $400 for a reserved table of eight. Guests will have the opportunity to sample more than 100 wines and 50 microbrews, enjoy gourmet food and live entertainment. Chili Cookoff
The missions committee from Western Reserve United Methodist Church will be hosting a chili cook off that will take place on Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. Cost is $5 a person and includes chili, hot dogs, snacks, beverages and dessert. Second annual community Austim and Disability fair
The Autism Society of Ohio, Mahoning Valley office, is seeking autism service providers to participate in its second Annual Community Autism and Disability Resource Fair on March 22 from 10 a.m until 2 p.m. at the Southern Park Mall in Boardman. Service providers will have the opportunity to provide participants information about autism and disability services and their organizations in the area and NE Ohio region. Free Tax Filing Link and Assistance
The YWCA of Youngstown is offering a self-serve link to file taxes for free. Also being offered are free tax workshops and free tax filing assistance. The self-serve link is available on the YWCA website at ywca.org/youngstown. To file taxes through this link, users must have a household income under $65,000 if single and $95,000 if married. Also needed are the user’s social security number, W2’s, 1099’s, 1098’s, information about other income, deduction and credit information (such as child care expenses, tuition, bills and union dues) and a copy of last year’s tax return, if possible. For free tax filing assistance, walk-ins will be accepted from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. March 6 and 20, and April 10 at the YWCA, located at 25 W. YWCA Dance-a-thon
The YWCA of Youngstown is seeking participants for a Dance-a-thon to take place from 4-9 p.m. on March 7 at the YWCA of Youngstown, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. Two people or more may form a team. Canfield Local Schools Welcomes Newest Cardinals
The Canfield Local School District will be holding kindergarten registration for the 2015/2016 school year for students residing in the Canfield Local School District at C.H. Campbell on April 14, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. -2:00 p.m. and at Hilltop on April 21, 2015 from 9:00 a.m. -2:00 p.m. New students in grades 1 through 4 are welcome to register at this time as well. Students who are currently attending kindergarten in Canfield do not need to re-register for first grade. The child must be a resident of the Canfield Local School District. Children entering kindergarten must have attained the age of five on or before September 30, 2015. Children entering first grade must have attained the age of six on or before September 30, 2015 and must have completed a successful year in kindergarten. The child’s original birth certificate must be presented at the time of registration. The child’s original social security card must be presented at the time of registration. Proof of residence must be presented at the time of registration, i.e. driver’s license and one of the following: purchase agreement for home, rental agreement for apartment, or gas or electric bill with residential address.
Divorce decree and/or proof of custody (if applicable) must be presented at the time of registration. According to Canfield Local Schools’ Board of Education policy, the immunization records of the students must be presented to register the student for kindergarten. The records must be from a physician’s office or a health clinic.
MCCTC is now accepting applications for 2015-2016
Students interested in attending the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center for the 2015-2016 school year can now apply. The application is available for sophomore students on the school’s website. Current students do not need to reapply. The school offers 22 programs and has a limited number of seats per program. Cabin fever fest
Bum off the winter blues at Cabin Fever Fest on Feb. 21 from 12-2 p.m. at the Wick Recreation Area. A chili cook-off, outdoor games, sled riding and other activities will be provided. Enter the snow sculpting competition (weather permitting) and participate in winter crafts. Sample chili and vote for your favorite for a small donation. Heritage gardening seminar
Fellows Riverside Gardens will be hosting Garden Seminar: Heritage Gardening for the 21st Century on Feb. 22 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Discover some of the successful, sustainable, and simple plants from the 18th through early 20th centuries. These tough and adaptable plants represent the foundation of our gardens today. Speakers will look at historic gardening methods that can be applied to our current gardens. The Bistro at MCCTC announces new winter and spring hours
Student-operated restaurant, The Bistro at MCCTC, has new winter and spring hours starting in January. The restaurant will be open for dine in or carryout from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Open dates are Feb. 10, 11, 12, 18, 19, 24, 25 and 26; March 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19 and 31; and April 1 and 2. The Bistro is run by students enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. This gives students the chance to gain experience in all facets of working in the restaurant industry, from working as kitchen staff and the Sous Chef to waiting tables and hosting.
