BPJWL to meet March 2

The next meeting of the Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League will be on March 2 at Glenellen Assisted Living, located at 9661 Market St. in Boardman, at 7 p.m. Members will be finalizing plans for the upcoming Quarter Auction on March 21 at St. Nicholas Social Hall at 6 p.m. Members can wear green in recognition of St. Patrick’s Day and to welcome Spring. Hostesses for the meeting are Sperry Rongone and Derrie Wilkes. The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is open to all women over 18, residing in Mahoning, Trumbull and Columbiana counties who are interested in friendship, fun and community involvement. Their mission is to provide a creative outlet for women interested in providing community service in areas of arts, conservation, education, home life, international affairs and public affairs. The truth about cholestrol

Women Artists art exhibition

The YWCA Women Artists: A Celebration! Annual Art Exhibition showcases works by local, regional and national women artists, age 18 and older. Entry forms are available by calling 330-746-6361, ext. 102 or at ywca.org/youngstown.

They are due no later than March 30. Artists may enter a maximum of five entries. There is a nonrefundable fee of $10 per entry or $45 for five entries. Entry is by CD only. This year’s juror is Susan Talbot-Stanaway, former director of the Zanesville Museum of Art, Zanesville. A preview party for the show will take place from 7-9 p.m. on June 20, at the YWCA. Proceeds from the art show benefit the YWCA Housing Programs.

Mardi Gras paws

Celebrate Mardi Gras with Legacy Dog Rescue as they host a Mardi Gras wine taste on Feb. 21 at Lil Paws Winery, located at 17547 Mahoning Ave. in Lake Milton, from 4–10 p.m. Admission is $10 for wine tasting, appetizers, desserts and classic Mardi Gras fare.

BPJWL celebrates 35 years

The Boardman Poland Junior Women’s League is celebrating its 35th anniversary this year. The league was established in 1979 and federated in 1980. Throughout the last 35 years BPJWL has raised more than $650,000 and donated it back to the local community. There will be a banquet on May 4 at Michael Alberinini’s in Boardman. The league would like to invite anyone who is a charter member, past president or past member to join in the celebration. Art sale

The YWCA of Youngstown will host an art sale from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. March 14 and 15 at the YWCA, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. This is an opportunity for artists to sell their artwork and for members of the community to purchase original art. The cost for artists is $10 per table. The YWCA will retain a 20 percent commission on all art sales. All artwork must be priced $100 or less. Artwork does not need to be framed. Artists under 18 will need a parent or guardian to reserve the table. Proceeds will benefit the Women Artists Annual Art Exhibition purchase of lighting. Tables are limited. Open enrollment for Austintown

The Austintown Local School District will have state wide open enrollment for the 2015-16 school year. Applications will be accepted for students in grades K through 9, and will be downloaded on the Austintown website beginning on March 2. In order to be considered for open enrollment, completed applications must be submitted online. Incomplete applications will not be considered. Any student living in the State of Ohio and entering grades K through 9 is eligible. One application must be completed for each student.

Nomination accepted for Children’s Advocate Awards

Nominations are now being accepted for the annual Children’s Advocate Awards presented by Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley. The purpose of these awards is to recognize individuals and organizations throughout the Mahoning Valley who exhibit the spirit of caring and who work to make a difference in the lives of the children of the communities we serve. Honorees will be recognized at the Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley “Champions for our Valley’s Children” Celebration Dinner on May 12 at The Lake Club. Consider nominating a special individual, group or organization for the Akron Children’s Hospital Mahoning Valley Children’s Advocate Award. The deadline for submission is March 16. Austintown Lions Club

On Feb. 9, at the Austintown Community Church, the Austintown Lions Club hosted a Zone 4 meeting. The meeting was presided by Zone Chairman Elmer Takash of the Hubbard Lions Club. The Zone is comprised of Lions Clubs from Austintown, Girard, Hubbard, McDonald, Youngstown and the Austintown Lioness Club. The clubs are part of District 13-D which is comprised of some 53 Lions Clubs in the counties of Mahoning, Trumbull, Portage, Stark and Columbiana. Special guests and cabinet members included District Governor Barbara Sorken from the Rootstown club, First Vice District Governor Bob Allgood from the East Liverpool Club, Second Vice District Governor Betty Robbins from the Newton Falls Club and Immediate Past District Governor Tom Zickefoose of the Girard Lions Club.

Austintown Optimist Club

The Austintown Optimist Club met at the Youngstown Saxon Club on Feb. 10 with all Optimist Clubs attending or represented. Zone 5 Lt. Governor, Jim Hoffman presided. Club presidents reported on project completed since the fourth quarter ended in October. All told, the five Optimist Clubs making up Zone 5 completed more than 20 community service projects between November 2014 and February 2015. These projects touched the lives of more than 2500 children and adults. Zone 5 will host the annual Zone 5 Oratorical Contest on March 4 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Springfield. First place winners will then compete in the Ohio District Oratorical Contest. The clubs were also updated on the newly built Zone 5 website by Pete Gabriel. Quarter auction

The Austintown Relay For Life Committee is hosting a Quarter Auction on March 7 at The IHM Parish Center in Austintown. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the auction will begin at 7 p.m. Tickets are $10 and include event admission, one bidding paddle, soft drinks, appetizers, dessert and one door prize entry. The event will also feature door prize drawings, a 50/50 raffle and a cash bar. Tickets must be purchased in advance by Feb. 23. Paid reservations will be held at the door. Walsh honors graduates

Walsh University honored Lisha Campbell and Sara Satterlee of Austintown as a part of its 2014 summer and fall graduates on Dec. 14. There was a special ceremony in the Gaetano M. Cecchini Family Health and Wellness Complex. Campbell was awarded Bachelor of Arts in Management and Satterlee honored with Master of Arts in Clinical Mental Health Counseling.

Austintown Local Schools announce Kindergarten Kick-Off

The Austintown Local Schools will be hosting a Kindergarten Kick-Off on March 25 at 6 p.m. at Austintown Elementary School. Students and parents will have the opportunity to tour the kindergarten classrooms, meet staff members and learn about transitioning smoothly from home or preschool to kindergarten. Information on staggered start, summer programs as well as tips to assist your child before and during kindergarten will all be discussed. All incoming kindergarten students, along with their parents, should attend this important event.

Patti’s Night of Pampering to be Feb. 23

There will be a spa night for patients currently receiving chemotherapy or radiation and a guest on Feb. 23 from 6-8 p.m. at Salon@Creekside. The night of pampering will offer spa services as a small donation for guests ($1 - $2 donation per service), giveaways, hand scrubs and massages, wig and hairpiece display, eyebrow and eyelash application, a Livestrong instructor from YMCA and more. Money donated will go toward the Paneraton and the Jonie Abdu Foundation.

Gamblers Anonymous to meet

Gamblers Anonymous, a 12-Step fellowship of compulsive gamblers who want to recover from their gambling addictions, will meet twice this week in the Youngstown-Warren area. A GA meeting is offered every Friday at Westminster Church, located at 119 Stadium Drive in Boardman, and another is offered every Sunday at Christ Church Presbyterian, located at 3425 Hopkins Road in Youngstown (in Cornersburg). Learn about species and habitats

Audubon Society/Mahoning Valley invites the public to learn about the National Audubon Society’s priority species and habitats. This program will be presented by Mandy Smith, the Education Manager at Fellows Riverside Gardens in Mill Creek MetroParks and formerly of Audubon Maryland-DC. 10th annual tasting fundraiser

The Youngstown Area Grocers Association will host its 10th Annual Beer and Wine Tasting fundraiser on March 20 from 6-9 p.m. at Stambaugh Auditorium, located at 1000 Fifth Ave. in Youngstown. Tickets are $50 each or $400 for a reserved table of eight. Guests will have the opportunity to sample more than 100 wines and 50 microbrews, enjoy gourmet food and live entertainment. Chili Cookoff

The missions committee from Western Reserve United Methodist Church will be hosting a chili cook off that will take place on Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. Cost is $5 a person and includes chili, hot dogs, snacks, beverages and dessert. Pictures will be shown of past youth mission trips and there will also be a game night with board games. This event is open to the community. Second annual community Austim and Disability fair

The Autism Society of Ohio, Mahoning Valley office, is seeking autism service providers to participate in its second Annual Community Autism and Disability Resource Fair on March 22 from 10 a.m until 2 p.m. at the Southern Park Mall in Boardman. Service providers will have the opportunity to provide participants information about autism and disability services and their organizations in the area and NE Ohio region. Free Tax Filing Link and Assistance

The YWCA of Youngstown is offering a self-serve link to file taxes for free. Also being offered are free tax workshops and free tax filing assistance. The self-serve link is available on the YWCA website at ywca.org/youngstown. To file taxes through this link, users must have a household income under $65,000 if single and $95,000 if married. Also needed are the user’s social security number, W2’s, 1099’s, 1098’s, information about other income, deduction and credit information (such as child care expenses, tuition, bills and union dues) and a copy of last year’s tax return, if possible. For free tax filing assistance, walk-ins will be accepted from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. March 6 and 20, and April 10 at the YWCA, located at 25 W. YWCA Dance-a-thon

The YWCA of Youngstown is seeking participants for a Dance-a-thon to take place from 4-9 p.m. on March 7 at the YWCA of Youngstown, located at 25 W. Rayen Ave. Two people or more may form a team. Also needed are dance groups interested in performing. Individuals and spectators are welcome. The cost is $15 per person for team captain and members, $20 for individuals and $8 for spectators. The Austintown Council of PTAs and the Fitch Art Department will present the seventh annual Souper Supper event on March 4 from 5-7 p.m. at the Austintown Fitch Cafeteria. MCCTC is now accepting applications for 2015-2016

Students interested in attending the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center for the 2015-2016 school year can now apply. The application is available for sophomore students on the school’s website. Current students do not need to reapply. The school offers 22 programs and has a limited number of seats per program. Wintertime tea

Botany for beginners

Have you ever been stumped by a botanical name? Are you confused by differences between xylem and phloem? Cabin fever fest

Bum off the winter blues at Cabin Fever Fest on Feb. 21 from 12-2 p.m. at the Wick Recreation Area. A chili cook-off, outdoor games, sled riding and other activities will be provided. Enter the snow sculpting competition (weather permitting) and participate in winter crafts. Sample chili and vote for your favorite for a small donation. Yoga in the gardens

T’ai Chi step one in the gardens

Restorative Yoga

Rumba dance class

Come out and enjoy learning this easy to follow slow dance Feb.24 from 7-8 p.m. at Pioneer Pavilion. No partner? No problem! It is a paired dance, but everyone will learn together. Contra dance at Pioneer Pavilion

Saxon Club to offer Bingo

The Saxon Club, located at 710 South Meridian Road in Youngstown, will now be offering Bingo on Sundays at 6:45 p.m. in the main ballroom. Doors open at 5 p.m. There will be regular Bingo specials, including $10, $15 and $20 packages and tear offs, as well as $10 special packages, pig numbers, birthday specials and more. Heritage gardening seminar

Fellows Riverside Gardens will be hosting Garden Seminar: Heritage Gardening for the 21st Century on Feb. 22 from 9 a.m. until 4 p.m. Discover some of the successful, sustainable, and simple plants from the 18th through early 20th centuries. These tough and adaptable plants represent the foundation of our gardens today. Speakers will look at historic gardening methods that can be applied to our current gardens. Explore the rich heritage of the garden and what it means. The speakers’ books will be available for purchase at the seminar. Twice-Loved Book Sale

Fellows Riverside Gardens will host the Twice-Loved Books Sale Feb. 21 through March 1 from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. Peruse the tables in the Antonucci Horticulture Library for much loved books on gardening, cooking and nature. There will also be magazines for sale. Donations of related used books are appreciated at any time. All proceeds will benefit the Antonucci Horticulture Library.

he Bistro at MCCTC announces new winter and spring hours

Student-operated restaurant, The Bistro at MCCTC, has new winter and spring hours starting in January. The restaurant will be open for dine in or carryout from 10:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. Open dates are Feb. 10, 11, 12, 18, 19, 24, 25 and 26; March 10, 11, 12, 17, 18, 19 and 31; and April 1 and 2. The Bistro is run by students enrolled in the Culinary Arts Program at the Mahoning County Career and Technical Center. This gives students the chance to gain experience in all facets of working in the restaurant industry, from working as kitchen staff and the Sous Chef to waiting tables and hosting. Tax preparation

The library will provide locations for free tax preparation and electronic filing for seniors and those (at any age) with low to moderate income. The IRS Volunteer Income Tax Assistance Program (VITA) and the Tax Counseling for the Elderly (TCE) Programs offer free tax help for taxpayers who qualify. Create a wild yeast sourdough starter on March 3 at 11 a.m. and March 24 at 6:30 p.m. In this bread-making program, you will create and discuss the step by step method for creating, nurturing and maintaining a robust wild yeast used to bake a variety of breads and sweet treats. Blood pressure check

There will be a blood pressure check by Salem Area Visiting Nurse Association at the Austintown library from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. on March 24.

Blood drive

The Mahoning Chapter of the American Red Cross serves the needs of St. Elizabeth Hospital. Sit ‘n Stitch

Stamping with Cindy

Decorate an ornament for Austintown Library’s all-seasons tree. Children of all ages are welcome to participate during regular library hours in the month of March.

Saturday Movie Matinee

Join Austintown Library for a Saturday Movie Matinee on March 21 at 2:30 p.m.. Bring your own snacks and drinks to enjoy during the movie! Children age 7 and younger must be with an adult. Movie will be a newly released DVD rated PG or G for the family.

Lego my library

Meet and enjoy creating Lego designs. Legos will be provided. For kids, ages 6 and up at Austintown Library, 6 p.m. March 4.

Gotta move story time!

For children ages 2-5 who are accompanied by a caregiver. Join Austintown Library at 10:00 a.m. March 5, 12, 19 and 26 for a variety of musical and movement activities that appeal to the “young and restless,” stimulate brain development, and motivate language learning. Adults and kids, get ready to act out stories and rhymes, sing and dance, talk and play!

Tales and Talk for 2s and 3s

Join the Austintown Library for developmentally appropriate books, songs, rhymes, finger plays and other activities that will help your child (ages 2-3) become a successful reader at 10:00 a.m. March 4, 11, 18 and 25. Children must be accompanied by an adult.

Bonding with babies & books

For caregivers and their little ones who are 6 to 23 months. Twenty minutes of language enrichment including rhymes, songs, and stories, followed by time to play and socialize. Children must be accompanied by an adult at Austintown Library, 10 a.m. March 3, 10, 17, 24 and 31.

Pre-kindergarten story time

This program is for 4 and 5 year olds and will help to develop pre-literacy and kindergarten readiness skills. We will use books, stories, rhymes, music, movement and crafts to help your child get ready for kindergarten at Austintown Library 11:30 a.m. March 4, 11, 18 and 25.
