Recent frigid weather left a thick coating of ice on the Lake Glacier Dam in Mill Creek Park.

Staff report

After a record low Monday, today’s weather in the Mahoning Valley won’t seem as bad. But it’s not good.

The high today is expected to be in the upper teens with a low around 8 degrees at night.

Monday’s low temperature of 13 below zero at 7:40 a.m. shattered the old record low of minus 4 for Feb. 16, which happened in 1963. Also, Monday’s low was the fourth-lowest temperature recorded in the Valley in February. The record is 16 below zero Feb. 9, 1934.

The cold air is staying with us through Friday. It won’t get to even 10 degrees for a high Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, said John Mayers, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Cleveland. The worst will be Thursday night with a low of 10 below zero, he said.

The average temperature for the month, so far, is about 19 degrees, about 8 degrees lower than normal, Mayers said.
