Bobby Harden releases album

NEW YORK

Bobby Harden, the acclaimed New York-based rhythm and soul artist and Youngstown native, has released his second album, “River of Soul.”

After his first album, “Soul Purpose,” released 16 years ago, Harden toured the world performing with the Original Blues Brothers Band, as well as playing the East Coast with his own ensemble, the eight-piece Soul Purpose Band. He then got married and had children and scaled back his performance schedule.

For the new album, Harden found vocal inspiration from the likes of James Cleveland, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett, B.B. King and James Brown. But “River of Soul” is not a retro effort.

“I’m not one to stay stuck in the mud by thinking there’s only one way to record R&B,” he said. “But I do think the foundation of a solid R&B groove has to be there.”

Harden intends to mount U.S. and European tours in 2016 to promote “River of Soul,” which is available at all major online music retailers.

Opera singer battles tumor

NEW YORK

Dmitri Hvorostovsky has withdrawn from four February performances of Verdi’s “Il Trovatore” at the Metropolitan Opera because of ongoing treatment for a brain tumor.

The 53-year-old Russian baritone announced his diagnosis in June and canceled performances through August to undergo treatment in London. He returned in September to sing three performances of the Count di Luna at the Met, including one televised worldwide.

Audiences greeted him with loud ovations and orchestra members threw white roses at him during the curtain calls.

Hvorostovsky currently is singing in a run of Tchaikovsky’s “Eugene Onegin” at London’s Royal Opera.
