Roughly 1 in 8 women will have the disease at some point in their lives, making it one of the most common types of cancer among U.S. women, second only to skin cancer.

Every year, about 200,000 women and 1,700 men receive a diagnosis.

More than 40,000 women and 450 men die from the disease annually.

Close to 90 percent of women diagnosed, however, will survive at least five years.

Common symptoms include a lump or thickening in or around the breast or underarm area, nipple tenderness or discharge, a change in the nippleā€™s size and shape and redness or swelling in the skin around the breast, areola or nipple.

Prevention includes maintaining a healthful weight, following a low-fat diet, engaging in regular exercise, refraining from smoking and limiting alcohol consumption to two drinks or fewer a day.
