SPECIAL TO THE VINDICATOR Alexx Hames, alumna of the Western Reserve Rangers 4-H Club, shows off the quilt she made from T-shirts she collected while a high school student at Western Reserve.

Staff report

When the Western Reserve Rangers 4-H Club met in August, Alexx Hames, a 4-H alumna and recent graduate of Youngstown State University, was the guest speaker.

Hames, who was to leave in late August to attend medical school on the Island of St. Vincent in the Caribbean, displayed and showed the T-shirt quilt she recently completed. The shirts were from her Western Reserve High School experiences.

Another Rangers alumna, Carol Ann Pitcairn, recently received a Ph.D. from the University of Michigan.

The group applauded Shannon Marshburn, Karl Reph and Emily Smith, who will serve on the 2015 4-H Royal Court. In addition, Erin Styka, Smith and Levi Smith will serve on the 2015 Mahoning County Outstanding Youth Court.

Crowning ceremonies will take place at 2 p.m. during Youth Day, Sept. 3, at the Canfield Fair on the concourse stage.

Graduating seniors were recognized and shared their plans. Katie Prosser and Taylor Smith will attend Ohio State University for pre-veterinary and architecture studies, respectively.

Emily and Levi Smith, who both did post-secondary studies at YSU, will begin their sophomore year there. Emily’s major is business and fashion, and Levi is studying business. Styka will attend Walsh University.

Adviser Steve Reph reported on a Webinar about Poultry Products that took place recently at the MetroParks Farm in Canfield.

The Junior Fair Board discussed the pre-fair coloring contest, the talent show, the bed race and the second annual 5K Run Walk during the fair. The procedure for registering livestock and small animals, including entry times and dates, were discussed.

Levi Smith and Camille Kirk received Outstanding of the Day Awards at the Ohio State Fair. He won for “Yeast Breads,” and she won for “Sew for Others.”

Emily Smith and Prosser told about the State 4-H Style Revue, which took place in Columbus on Aug. 4. Emily was congratulated for being selected Mahoning County’s nominee to the Ohio 4-H Fashion Board. She was interviewed and will be notified in September if she will serve on the board for 2016.

All members who represented Mahoning County at the Ohio State Fair received recognition and congratulations.

Rangers encourage the public to go to the Canfield Fair and visit the Junior Fair exhibits and shows.

The Canfield Fair Style Revue will take place at 11 a.m. Sept. 5 in the auditorium of Youth Organization Building No. 25.
