Black fly spraying to take place in Beaver, Butler and Lawrence counties

ELLWOOD CITY, Pa. — An aerial black-fly suppression operation will take place todayand Friday along several creeks and rivers throughout western Pennsylvania, including those in Lawrence County.

Beginning in Fayette County, the operation will continue north and treat the Youghiogheny, Kiskiminetas and Conemaugh rivers along with the Connoquenessing, Neshannock, Slippery Rock, Mahoning, Redbank and Loyalhanna creeks.

Spraying will be conducted by helicopter through Fayette, Westmoreland, Armstrong, Indiana, Cambria, Clarion, Lawrence, Beaver and Butler counties.

The bacterial larvicide being dispersed, Vectobac 12AS, is not a chemical product and is the only product used in Pennsylvania waterways for black-fly suppression. Any questions or concerns should be directed to Douglas Orr of the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection at 717-215-5456.
