Bids were opened Wednesday to repair a portion of Western Reserve Road that was heavily damaged by last winter’s weather.

Six bids were opened in the Mahoning County Purchasing Office to repair just over a mile of the road between Tippecanoe and Hitchcock roads in Boardman Township.

The low bid was submitted by Karvo Paving Co. of Stow at $708,505. The high bid was from Chagrin Valley Paving in Chagrin Falls for $1,034,766.

Other bids were between $700,000 and $800,000. They were from The Shelly Co. in Twinsburg at $725,734; Shelly and Sands Inc. of Akron at $765,861; Stateline Paving of North Lima at $777,019; and R.T. Vernal Paving & Excavating Inc. of North Lima at $781,836.

James Fortunato, county purchasing director, said it will take at least two weeks before the bids are ready for commissioners to review because they have to be approved by the prosecutor’s office.

He said it would take about two to three weeks before they are on the agenda for commissioners to vote on. Commissioners must approve a bid before work can begin.

After they are approved, it should take about three weeks for the contract between the county and the company awarded the work to be ironed out, a spokesman for the county engineer’s office said.

The work was expected to cost about $980,000. Construction should take place sometime in September.

The old asphalt will be replaced.

The upcoming project is not the only work planned for the road.

A widening project on Western Reserve will take place between Hitchcock and Market Street in 2019 or 2020 at a likely cost between $6 million and $8 million.

After that, in a final phase, Western Reserve likely will be widened between Market Street and South Avenue.
