Now that all three major-party candidates seeking U.S. Sen. Rob Portman’s seat next year have filed their reports, it’s possible to see how their personal finances compare.
Former Ohio Gov. Ted Strickland, the leading Democratic challenger, reported earnings higher than Portman’s during the reporting period — some $357,625 in salary, consulting fees and pension. Strickland also received a stipend he didn’t have to report from the United Nations.
Portman’s Senate salary, also non-reportable, is roughly $174,000.
Portman reports worth of between $8 million and $20 million, ranking him among Congress’ wealthiest members, based on a 2013 analysis by the nonpartisan Center for Responsive Politics. Strickland reported assets totaling between $300,000 and $700,000.
Cincinnati councilman P.G. Sittenfeld, a Democrat facing off against Strickland, reported earnings of $143,527 and assets of $329,178.
