Aden, Yemen, hit by coalition airstrikes

SANAA, Yemen

Saudi-led coalition warplanes launched dozens of airstrikes on Yemen’s southern port city of Aden on Saturday, as Shiite Houthi rebels and their allies mobilized hundreds of reinforcements in an effort to wrest control of the city from militias supporting embattled President Abed Rabbo Mansour Hadi, security officials and eyewitnesses said.

The officials said opposing fighters faced off in fierce street battles in the Aden neighborhoods of Khour Makser and Dar Saad as the Houthis try to gain a foothold in the districts.

“The planes were carrying out airstrikes every 10 minutes and continued throughout the night,” said Aden resident Mohammed al-Kheir.

Israeli police kill 2 after knife attacks

JERUSALEM

Israeli police officers on Saturday shot dead two knife-wielding Palestinians in response to separate stabbing attacks against Israeli officers, police said, before a third attack against police forces later in the day left three officers injured.

In the first incident, police spokeswoman Luba Samri said a 17-year-old east Jerusalem resident named Ali Mohammed Abu Ghannam approached a roadblock with a butcher’s knife and tried to attack officers there. Samri said officers shot Abu Ghannam dead after he refused to lay down his weapon. Dozens of Palestinian youths clashed with police forces after the incident, hurling rocks at the police, who responded with tear gas.

Starbucks back in business after outage

SEATTLE

Starbucks was back in business Saturday after a computer outage forced thousands of its stores to close early the night before.

The company said the outage was resolved Friday night after several hours. The glitch affected registers at 7,400 company-operated stores in the U.S. and 1,000 in Canada, and prompted some stores to give away drinks.

Starbucks said the outage was caused by “a failure during a daily system refresh.” Jim Olson, a company spokesman, stressed it was an internal issue and that no external breach was involved.

Italian navy rescues 274 migrants in sea

AUGUSTA, Sicily

Italian authorities say they have rescued 274 migrants from a migrant vessel in the Mediterranean, while more than 300 rescued a day earlier arrived in a port in Sicily.

Italian Navy spokeswoman Giorgia Trecca said Saturday’s rescue took place off the Libyan coast but could not give details. There were no reports of any casualties.

Meanwhile, 334 migrants who were rescued Friday were dropped off in the Sicilian port of Augusta, including 46 women and 42 children.

The incidents show the flow of migrants trying to reach Europe in rickety boats has continued unabated after last Sunday’s deadly capsizing of a migrant ship that is believed to have left at least 800 dead.
