Horizon League to add 10th member

YOUNGSTOWN

The Horizon League is planning to add a 10th member, Wright State athletics director Bob Grant said Friday, according to WSU’s school newspaper, The Guardian.

The member will be within busing distance of Dayton and will be announced by the end of May, Grant said. The most obvious choice is Atlantic Sun-member Northern Kentucky, which is just across the Ohio River from Cincinnati and has shown interest in joining the Horizon League for several years. Belmont, which is located in Nashville, Tenn., is a member of the Horizon in soccer only.

The league has lost Butler and Loyola in the last three years and added Oakland before the 2013-14 school year.

Peyton Manning gives Tennessee $3 million

KNOXVILLE, Tenn.

Denver Broncos quarterback Peyton Manning is donating $3 million to Tennessee to benefit the Volunteers’ football program and Manning’s scholarship endowment.

The university issued a release Friday saying Manning and wife Ashley announced a “$3 million leadership commitment.” Manning starred for Tennessee from 1994-97.

Manning’s donation honors Gus Manning, who isn’t related to the quarterback, and Carmen Tegano. Gus Manning has served Tennessee’s athletic program since 1951 in many roles. Tegano, an associate athletic director, has worked at Tennessee for over three decades. Gate 16 at Neyland Stadium will be called the Gus Manning Gate. A student-athlete dining hall in a residence hall under construction will be named after Carmen and Deborah Tegano.

Missouri makes Pinkel latest $4 million coach

COLUMBIA, Mo.

Missouri has extended football coach Gary Pinkel’s contract through the 2019 season and upped his yearly salary to $4.02 million, making him the 10th Southeastern Conference coach to have a yearly salary of at least $4 million.

Pinkel is headed into his 15th season at Missouri and is already the winningest coach in school history with 113 victories. He was making $3.2 million per year.

The 62-year-old Pinkel has led the Tigers to SEC East titles the last two years. Missouri, which joined the SEC in 2012, has won five division titles under Pinkel, including three in the Big 12.

Pinkel was coach of the year in the SEC last year, guiding the Tigers to an 11-3 finish and Citrus Bowl win after being picked fourth in the division.
