Sadecky’s Puppet Program put on a puppet show called “Spun” at Austintown Elementary School on March 27. All three grades — kindergarten, first and second grade — got to see a show by the program, but the first and second grade students got to see a different, more appropriately themed, puppet show called “A new kind of hero.”

Principal Thomas Lenton scheduled a show from Sadecky’s once every year for the last 13 years.

“It’s really kind of a treat and a reward for working so hard and behaving so well throughout the year,” Lenton said. “It’s a treat and a send off for spring recess.”

Fifteen kindergarten classes gathered in the gymnasium to watch the show first, followed by the other two grades in the school to watch theirs at a separate time.

“There is always some kind of message about how to make friends, how to make good decisions and anti-bullying,” Lenton said. “The messages are really impactful for the kids.”

Lenton continued to say that these shows are for more than just the children, there are aspects the adults can appreciate as well — sometimes there is an occasional joke on a level the students wouldn’t quite understand for the sake of the adult viewers, teachers and aides.

“I really feel this is an old art form — it’s old school,” Lenton said. “They have great delivery and the quality is really high.”

Jen Kalouris, one of the kindergarten teachers at AES, said it’s nice for the students to see the story.

“Just to bring a story alive is awesome,” Kalouris said.

After the show some students got to see the puppets and how they worked with the workers from Sadecky’s.
