Ohio House panel OKs bill revisiting student assessments

COLUMBUS (AP) — An Ohio House panel has approved a proposal that would require state education officials to overhaul Ohio’s academic standards in English language arts, math, science and social studies and the tests that go with them.

The House Education Committee approved the bill today, sending it to the full House.

The measure aims to replace the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Career, or PARCC, tests amid public push back by requiring the state Education Department to request proposals for new tests and bar such national consortia from participating.

House Republicans also have prohibited state money from flowing to PARCC in the state budget moving through the Statehouse.

The bill also would limit Ohio’s new high school end-of-course exams to three hours in duration.
