Youngstown native tells of William Wells

FREDERICK, MD.

William Heath, a Youngstown native, is the author of a new release, “William Wells and the Struggle for the Old Northwest.”

The biography covers the story of Wells, who was born on the Appalachian frontier and adopted into a tribe of Miami Indians who had captured him at age 13.

After marrying Chief Little Turtle’s daughter, Wells distinguished himself as a Miami warrior, an American spy and an Indian agent with multilingual skills that made him a valuable interpreter.

Heath’s book details pioneer life in the Ohio Valley from both white and Indian perspectives as Anglo-Americans pushed westward and competed with the Indian nations of the Old Northwest.

Heath is professor emeritus of English at Mount St. Mary’s College in Emmitsburg, Md. His book is available online, at bookstores and directly from the University of Oklahoma Press, 800-627-7377 or www.oupress.com.
