CAMPBELL

The Campbell Police Department moves forward with its new lieutenant.

Detective Sgt. Kevin Sferra of Campbell police was promoted to the position, which he started Monday.

“I’m very appreciative for the opportunity to take on more of a leadership role, and to help Chief [Drew] Rauzan move the department forward in a positive direction,” Sferra said.

Sferra has served the department for 14 years, first as a part-time patrolman. He also worked as an officer in Poland village and at Youngstown State University, and was an investigator for the state.

“Kevin Sferra is one of the finest officers in the area,” Rauzan said. “I look forward to a long future working side by side with Kevin, as we guide this department into the future.”

For the time being, Sferra will retain his duties as a detective while taking on the responsibilities of his new position.

“Kevin has attributes to make an excellent police chief in any community, and I am grateful that we still have him in Campbell. He is truly an asset,” Rauzan said.

Sferra replaces John Rusnak, a 17-year veteran with the department, who attended a disciplinary hearing March 13 where he voluntarily demoted himself from lieutenant to patrolman and was placed on suspension.

Rusnak was disciplined for overspending time at home during his patrol shifts, and for mishandling a 2012 investigation at Campbell Memorial High School.
