Poland North Elementary School hosted Mother-Son Night on March 26.

Mothers and sons dressed up as Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles for the night, receiving wristbands to complete their costumes at the door.

Tami Volpini, a member of the Parent-Teacher Organization chaired the event this year and last year’s mother-daughter event. Volpini said she had been planning this event for a couple months, but once she got confirmation that Master Tom Ritchie from the Martial Arts Training Center in Poland was going to be in attendance, the fitting theme was planned.

“It’s just such a great opportunity for the mom’s and kids to be together and spend time with each other,” Volpini said.

Provided at the event were four stations, cookie decorating, photo booth and picture frame making, handprint crafts and a mini lesson in martial arts training with Master Ritchie.

Master Ritchie spoke with the students and parents about the discipline taught in martial arts training and highlighted some of the students on his competitive team. He called a few students in his program up for a short demonstration. Ritchie honored one student in particular competing that following Saturday, encouraging others to participate in doing something challenging as well.

“You’re a winner because you went and did it,” Ritchie said. “If you get a trophy it’s icing on the cake, but you’re all winners starting out.”

Many students and parents came to Mother-Son Night, Volpini commented, following suit with Father-Daughter Night just a few weeks prior.

“Almost all of the boys in the school are here with moms or special people,” Volpini said.
