The Poland library was the location for a movie release party for “Insurgent” on March 18. The movie is based on the book of the same name by Veronica Roth, which is the second installment in the Divergent trilogy.
“The movie releases Friday [March 20], so we decided to have a party,” said Cindy Beach, teen services librarian.
The event offered crafts, including making book charms that looked like miniatures of the novels in the Divergent trilogy; pizza, chips and soda; a selfie corner, in which participants could pose next to cutouts of one of the main characters, Four; a version of the game Monster, in which two participants are assigned to the “Erudite” faction and try to figure out which participants are Divergent, and more. Participants had the chance to win several different prizes, including movie posters and tee shirts.
“We have our TAB members present [the event,” sad Beach. “They talk about the games and the TAB program. It’s a great way to tell kids about TAB that maybe don’t get library news and would like to join.”
TAB, the Teen Advisory Board, helps the library branches make decisions about library programs and books that the library will purchase, as well as helping to make sure that the library is offering programs that are still relevant to teens today. More information on TAB can be found on the Public Library of Youngstown and Mahoning County’s website at www.libraryvisit.org.
“The library is also going on Pinterest and Instagram to spread awareness,” Beach said. “We are in the process of redeveloping our website to have Instagram and other social media. It’s really helpful because it means that teens don’t just have to hear from us - teens can learn about what the library has to offer from other teens.”
