Earthkind Roses

What: Rosarian Caye Aiello used to pamper her hybrid tea roses until she studied the Earthkind method at Texas A&M and returned home to install a trial rose garden at Ohio State University’s Chadwick Arboretum. She now teaches workshops on selecting low-care roses and planting with Earthkind techniques.

PRODUCE SAFETY: GAPs Training

What: This class meets the standards for the Food Safety Modernization Act for those farmers/growers who are raising produce for sale to the public.

Nature in Bloom
When: Next Thursday, 8 a.m. to 8:30 p.m.
What: Explore spring’s delicate blooms in the wilds of western Pennsylvania at the Wildflower Reserve at Raccoon Creek State Park, and the new Pittsburgh Botanic Garden and its woodlands. Enjoy spring-inspired meals and a special visit at Joe Hamm’s daffodil delights.
Where: Fellows Riverside Gardens, 123 McKinley Ave., Youngstown.
Cost: $155; FFRG, $110.

Starry Night
When: April 17, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m.
What: Mahoning Valley Astronomical Society and MetroParks’ Recreation Department’s “star party.” View galaxies, star clusters, double stars, nebulae and Jupiter through high- powered telescopes.
Details: Free. Weather- dependent. Presentation will take place inside McMahon Hall. Rain date: April 24.

Hike & Walk
When: Sunday, April 25 and May 3, 2 to 4 p.m.
What: Search for spring wildflowers.
Where: Sunday, meet at Scholl Recreation Area. April 25, meet at Yellow Creek Park.
Details: April 25, wear boots for creek crossings. Moderate difficulty, 2 miles. Spring beauty, adders tongue and squirrel corn are just a few of the vernal bloomers you’ll see with on these walks.
Farm Tours
When: Sunday, April 26, 1 to 4 p.m.
What: Take a guided tractor wagon tour of the MetroParks Farm. Tours leave about every half-hour. Barns will be open to visit with the animals.
