300 Sisters in Red welcome registrations for health fair

300 Sisters in Red, a free health and wellness fair, is taking registrations for the first 300 women who respond.

The event will take place from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. April 18 in Kilcawley Center at Youngstown State University. For information on how to register call 330-480-3070. Sponsors are Mercy Health Youngstown and The Links Inc., Youngstown Chapter.

The annual event, in its 10th year, features free health screenings, lunch, presentations by physicians and other health-care professionals, fitness demonstrations, massages, door prizes and displays.

Among the health screenings will be total cholesterol and blood sugar, which require a 12-hour fast; body fat; bone density; stroke risk assessment; and colon cancer and HIV screenings.

Dr. Fidelis O. Mkparu will present “The Effects of Depression on the Heart.” Other presentations will focus on mental health in the black community, HIV testing, training the body and mind to reach full potential, heart disease caused by gingivitis, and the Affordable Care Act.

Providing additional support are the American Heart Association, Youngstown State University, Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Inc., Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, American Family Insurance, Junior Civic League of Youngstown, YWCA of Youngstown, Vicki Collins, Gisele Washington and the Youngstown/Warren Black Nurses Association.
