Austintown, Warren get COPS grants

CLEVELAND

Three-year grants of $250,000 to Austintown and $375,000 to Warren under the Community Oriented Policing Services program were announced Tuesday by the U.S. Attorney.

The Austintown grant is for two police officers and the Warren grant is for three.

Those police departments are among seven northeast Ohio police agencies sharing $5.1 million in COPS grants announced this week, which pay for 41 police officers.

Since 1995, the U.S. Department of Justice’s COPS program has awarded more than $14 billion nationally to pay law enforcement officers’ salaries and benefits. Grants are awarded based on financial need, local crime rates and community policing plans.
