City fire department schedules open house

YOUNGSTOWN

The Youngstown Fire Department will host an event to honor Fire Prevention Day from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday at fire station No. 1, 420 Martin Luther King Blvd.

The free event will include firehouse tours, refreshments, a free raffle to win fire extinguishers, and a smoke detector giveaway. Demonstrations on fire-extinguisher usage, CPR, choking rescue, bleeding control and auto extraction will be performed. Special fire-safety activities, story time and a coloring contest will be offered for children. The theme of Fire Prevention Month 2014 is “Working Smoke Detectors Save Lives.”

Roadway Cleanup

YOUNGSTOWN

Green Youngstown and the Mahoning County Recycling Division Green Team are partnering with the Ohio Department of Transportation to host a Fall State Roadway Cleanup on Saturday.

Volunteer registration will be at the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front Street, at 8 a.m. and the cleanup will take place from 9 a.m. to noon. The Mahoning County Sheriff Office’s day-reporting crew will also be there to assist.

Individual volunteers and groups from local community organizations will meet at the downtown center to pick up free garbage bags, litter pickers, gloves, and other supplies. Volunteers will then drive to cleanup sites throughout Youngstown and surrounding areas.

Scrap tire dropoff

HOWLAND

A scrap-tire dropoff for Howland residents will be 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Oct. 6 to Oct. 10 at the Public Works Department, 3600 North River Road. Residents may drop off a maximum of eight passenger car tires with no rims.

SWCD election set

CANFIELD

The Mahoning Soil and Water Conservation District will conduct an election for a seat on its board of supervisors at 5 p.m. and a pond construction and maintenance clinic at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Greier Ag Center Inc., 9585 Columbiana-Canfield Road. A light meal will be served for $6 beginning at 5 p.m. All adult Mahoning County residents or landowners are eligible to vote. For information, call 330-740-7995.
