Nonviolence Week begins Oct. 5

Nonviolence Week, sponsored by Youngstown State University’s Student Diversity Programs, will take place at Kilcawley Center on campus and other city venues next Sunday through Oct. 10.

The fifth annual nonviolence parade and rally, planned by Mahoning Valley Sojourn to the Past, the City of Youngstown, Youngstown City Schools, the YSU office of Student Diversity Activities, the Boys and Girls club, the YWCA and CIRV, will take place next Sunday at 2 p.m. in front of the Williamson School of Business on Wood Street.

The parade steps off at 3 p.m., and the rally will be at the Covelli Centre, 229 E. Front St.

Parade participants will include Minijean Brown Trickey, one of the Little Rock Nine; state Senator Joseph Schiavoni of Boardman, D-33rd; Mayor John A. McNally; the Boys and Girls club drummers as well as students from YSU and Fitch High School. Micah Smith, a Sojourn student and senior at Early College, will be master of ceremonies.

At the rally, there will be a board titled “Unforgettable Violence.” People may bring pictures of loved ones and write their names on a card to be placed on the board that will be displayed at YSU.

On Oct. 6, there will be wristbands available and a nonviolence arcade on the second floor hallway of Kilcawley from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

Hair chalking and temporary tattoos also will be available. The presentation “NBA: No Bullying Allowed” will take place in McKay Auditorium on the first floor of Beeghley College of Education from 10 to 11 a.m. and 2 to 3 p.m.

On Oct. 7, there will be a campuswide Purple Out day, where you can show your solidarity by wearing or displaying purple. There will also be a series of anti-bullying workshops. At 6 p.m., a town-hall meeting will take place at Choffin Career Center, 200 E. Wood St., with satellite sites around the city to discuss the topic of youth stopping the violence. Panelists will include Brown Trickey, McNally and police Chief Robin Lees.

“Bully,” a documentary on peer bullying in schools across America, will be shown from 10 a.m. to noon, 1 to 3 p.m., and 5 to 7 p.m. Oct. 8 in Kilcawley.

On Oct. 10, there will be a Women’s and Gender Studies public-service announcement contest launch as well as a series of workshops beginning at 10 a.m.

To wrap up the event, there will be a self-defense class sponsored by Youngstown Student Education Association also on Oct. 10, presented by Izzy Wilson, Chun Kuo Defense in Kilcawley’s Ohio Room.
